It's important to make a
distinction between "Search Engine Submission" and "Search Engine
Optimization". These terms, along with numerous others, are often used
synonymously to refer to efforts used to promote websites on the search
engines. To clarify, "Search Engine Optimization" refers to preparing a
website's pages for optimum exposure to the search engines. "Search Engine
Submission" refers to notifying the search engines of the existence of your
website. Just submitting alone does not mean a website will necessarily rank
well. There are hundreds of companies that claim they will submit a website to
"thousands" of search engines. The ads and email of these companies will state
something along the lines of…
"We Will Submit Your Site to 500,000 Search Engines for Only $14.95"
Don't waste the money - these are complete scams. First of all, there aren't
500,000 search engines. Second, even if the claim made is to just submit to a
few thousand, there aren't that many that will accept the listing because many
are theme based directories or search engines. As an example, a site about
classic automobiles won't be listed in a search engine or directory that
focuses on Real Estate. Third, the site will be submitted to 'Free' link pages
that are used for nothing more than "email harvesters", that is extracting
email addresses so they can send "spam". There are many other reasons these
services are a waste of money. Don't fall for their claims!
