Web Design and Promotion Tip

Periodically a tip on a web design technique will be presented along with how it effects or should be utilized in regards to web site promotion.

The HTML
Tag.

The
tag is used specifically to specify a bold heading on a web page. The text specified within the
tags is large and bold and is displayed in a browser like so....

LARGE AND BOLD

In the early days of web design it was commonly used but in recent years most designers have stopped utilizing it. The problem, as can be seen above, is the text is too big and too ugly for most web pages of today. In most browsers
is an oversized font and looks out of place on the page.

So whats this got to do with web promotion? Some of the search engines give the words found within the
tags more weight in regards to relevancy when indexing a web page. The
tag now becomes a useful method to highlight for the search engines the relevant keywords on a web page.

So now a method is needed to use the
tag but not display the large, ugly text. Fortunately there is a way to achieve the benefit of the
tag and at the same time display text that fits in with the scheme of the web page. By using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) the size, font, color and many other attributes can be specified so that a browser will display the text in an appropriate manor. One that is cohesive with the rest of the web page. This is a great way to get a boost in relevancy and better control of a web page's appearance in one step.

If your not familiar with CSS here is an " Intro to CSS " which provides more details. However, the following instructions should be simple enough that anyone can use the technique on their web pages.

In the
section of the web page insert the following code:

The above code will tell a browser to change all
tag text from the default large font into the font size, color and type that is specified for the H1 in the tag, the
tag can be used on web pages to gain extra relevancy without sacrificing the appearance of the page. Since many search engines give more weight to the keywords appearing within the
tags this is one technique that can be utilized to help in web promotion efforts.
